The chapters are easy to read and packed with life examples and scriptural passages to guide our thinking. The man who carries on an act of impurity is not simply breaking a human code, nor even sinning against the God who at some time in the past gave him the gift of the Spirit.

The final chapter is about the relationship of God’s grace to discipline which I kind of wished was the first chapter of the book instead of the end. Just when we think we are the safest, when we feel no need to keep our guard up, to work on our inner integrity, to discipline ourselves for godliness - temptation will come! Finally, there is a short epilogue with a concluding argument for the importance of Godly discipline and the correct response to grace God has given us.Incredible resource, I highly recommend this to every Christian male, and even Christian females to know what to look for in a guy! I have prayed and read daily since I began this study, and I have grown so much closer to God and the Lord Jesus Christ! Leadership is another short chapter that bring a different perspective, but something that is important for men especially.

Everything is explained in such a way that I often stopped to think, 'Why didn't I see that before'. If there is a spark of spiritual desire in your soul, this book will surely kindle it into a blazing passion for godly discipline.

Hughes lays out quite the daunting challenge of living a disciplined Christian life with his 16 specific areas of discipline for the Christian man to live by. Be involved, be willing to be uncomfortable, to be challenged, and to fail, if all for the glory of Christ. Update: When I originally read this book, it was a book I thought would be beneficial to re-read every 2 years.

The book is separated int0 different sections, which include relationships, soul, character, ministry and discipline. I am therefore so grateful to God for this great aid to the overriding aim of all of our lives: Christlikeness - read it and repent. The difference between legalism and discipline is one of motivation: legalism is self-centered; discipline is God-centered. It was the breaking of the tenth commandment (coveting his neighbor's wife) that led him to commit adultery, thus breaking the seventh commandment. When his intent became apparent to his servants, one tried to dissuade him, saying, "Isn't this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite?Some of the disciplines include purity, marriage, and the discipline of the mind, discipline of devotion, integrity, work and discipline of giving and discipline of ministry. I found it especially telling that he would put a chapter on the importance of working in the character section of the book, and after reading the chapter and his arguments, one I fully agree with. After all the lack of manhood is not a challenge to American society alone, but to the world as a whole.
