There are several types of squirrels in the United States. Ground squirrels, flying squirrels, and tree squirrels being the most common. These highly adaptable rodents are great at making the most of their environments and will often feed on a wide variety of foods. We have chosen 11 species from the 3 main types of squirrels to highlight here today, including both the smallest and the largest North American natives. 11 Types of squirrels found in the United States 1. Eurasian red squirrels Other notable projects include red squirrel projects in the Greenfield Forest, including the buffer zones of Mallerstang, Garsdale and Widdale; [32] the Northumberland Kielder Forest Project; and within the National Trust reserve in Formby. These projects were originally part of the Save Our Squirrels campaign that aimed to protect red squirrels in the north of England, but now form part of a five-year Government-led partnership conservation project called "Red Squirrels Northern England" [33] to undertake grey squirrel control in areas important for red squirrels.

The red squirrel has a typical head-and-body length of 7 + 1⁄ 2 to 9in), a tail length of 15 to 20cm (6 to 8in), and a mass of 250 to 340g (9 to 12oz). Males and females are the same size. The Eurasian red squirrel is somewhat smaller than the American eastern grey squirrel, which has a head-and-body length of 25 to 30cm (10 to 12in) and weighs between 400 and 800g (14oz and 1lb 12oz). While it isn’t technically flying, the squirrels will run to the top of trees, jump out, and spread their skin flaps to help them glide to their next destination. The longest recorded glide of a Southern Flying Squirrel was 200ft, but they usually make much smaller leaps.
