Description

Codenames Duet makes two-player games engaging and enjoyable, but it doesn’t fare well with more players, which the rule book says is possible if you play in teams. Let's suppose you find a good one while your partner is still looking, so you offer to give the first clue. She's not sure about the other miniature word, but she has figured out that you might eat a salad for lunch.

After the verbal clue is given, the field operatives must guess which of the words go with the clue. You can choose to relax the "one word" rule and allow multi-word names, acronyms, titles, and compound words. If you get both Codenames and Duet, you can combine the word tiles from each for more variation, and the brand offers a bunch of additional versions (such as Codenames Deep Undercover, an adult version of the game, Codenames Pictures which uses images instead of words, and Codenames: Disney Family Edition), but it doesn’t sell expansion packs, like you might expect from a card-based game. Correct answers will reveal the word cards as being agents, whilst incorrect answers can either result in the discovery of an innocent bystander - which simply forces the current group to stop guessing using their clue - or an assassin, causing the game to immediately end and all the players to lose. The clue-givers both have access to one side of a double-sided solution card that shows which word cards their partner or teammates need to guess.Neither of us expected to have a limited number of clues or only being able to guess a set amount of bystanders to have much of an impact on the game, but it did. Your partner then guesses as many words as they like one by one, if they guess an agent you cover the word with a green agent card and may continue guessing. To give all clues from one side before even starting to give clues from the other side is not in the spirit of the game. Some games are a struggle where you run into lots of bystanders and have to use your sudden death turn to pull out a victory. Any wrong guess ends the turn immediately, but if the field operatives guess a word of their team's color, they can keep guessing.

Its accolades include the prestigious German “ Spiel des Jahres,” or “Game of the Year,” award in 2016, putting it in stellar company—other winners include Ticket to Ride and Dominion. If the field operative touches an innocent bystander, the spymaster covers it with an innocent bystander card. Each clue that's given costs one “timer token,” a designated number of which are set out at the beginning.Maybe your turn ended early because of a wrong guess, or maybe you chose to end it early because you weren't willing to risk running into an assassin. While it did take us a few plays to fully grok some of the intricacies, like figuring out that one black assassin on your side of the key card will always be a green mark on your partner’s side, we were enjoying the game from our very first play. And a word that looks like a green agent on your side of the key card might be something completely different on turns when you are the guesser. Codenames Online is still in beta – we are working hard to improve it and will continue supporting and updating this implementation.

Codenames is a 2015 party card game designed by Vlaada Chvátil and published by Czech Games Edition. If an invalid clue is given – the clue is explicitly invalidated by the opposing spymaster – the turn ends immediately and the opposing team gets to randomly reveal one of their own agents. If you are a fan of the original Codenames you need this in your collection, both as a game that stands on its own and as a source of four hundred new words for Codenames. When your back’s against the wall and you know you need to take a shot in a moment of uncertainty, having something to tip the scale one way or the other can be a lifesafer. Our mission is to produce engaging articles like reviews, tips and tricks, game rules, strategies, etc. Most notably, by having two different answer keys spread over the same grid of words, players can exploit overlaps. Your stomach tightens, because that word is an assassin, but you act calm, as though it would not bother you at all for her to pick that word. Moscow 8-8, Jakarta 7-7, and Singapore 6-6 are just like the standard mission, but with fewer tokens. Two teams compete by each having a "spymaster" give one-word clues that can point to multiple words on the board.
