Description

Bodies’ third installment sees Detective Sergeant Shahara Hasan’s investigation in 2014 set among the chaos of race riots, and the final part of the series is told by a woman named Maplewood in a futuristic era set in 2050 when a techno-apocalypse scrambles civilian minds. Bodies on Netflix is based on the mind-bending graphic novel by Si Spencer, with the same name. The comic was released in 2015, and Si Spencer teamed up with four different illustrators, each of which gave each time frame its unique feel. As well as his work as an author, Si was also a scriptwriter, and during his career worked on shows such as Grange Hill, EastEnders and The Bill. The story is quite convoluted, but there is a clear maturity to it. It jumps between points in time that have no real connection, so you are effectively reading four wildly different stories featuring original characters in believable settings, each drawn in its own style. Bottom line is that the story is good, but you have to be a fan of this particular niche of supernatural. I'm sure it can be argued that the flow of the story could have been handled differently to make it more accessible for the ordinary reader. I say give it a try, you never know if it's going to be your cup of tea. In October 2010, Vertigo published the first issue of a Hellblazer mini series, Hellblazer: City of Demons.

First I need to point out this groovy cover - great right? Draws the eye, it's pin-up, pulp, fun, and blood splattered. This graphic novel is a multi-threaded time travel murder mystery of sorts. It has many mythological aspects and delves into the ideas of secret societies, ancient texts and even manages to rope in bog bodies. The narrative is exceptionally complex and at times, honestly, is beyond total comprehension. I was able to unravel the overarching concept of the book but many of the details simply escaped me completely.Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Kyle Soller, Amaka Okafor, Stephen Graham and Shira Hass – Pictures: Getty Images Netflix’s Bodies will likely continue in the same vein, as a very stylized project, in the hands of director Marco Kreutzpaintner who is known for 2018’s thriller Beat as well as the sci-fi romance, Soulmates, from 2020. Also directing is Doctor Who’s Haolu Wang, a Chinese writer and director whose intensely psychological and emotional works include the award-winning The Pregnant Ground from 2019. Writers for the series include Torchwood’s Paul Tomalin (who is also an executive producer for the show) along with Gangs of London’s Danusia Samal. Monday’s shoot appeared to focus on the 1940s, with windows taped up to protect against bomb blasts and headlines on newspaper boards relating to World War Two.” In summary, for intense fans of the genre, this is probably a winner but for me as a more casual fan this blew my head apart. It’s graphic, innovative and complex but maybe a bit too complex for my addled mind.

Related stories recommended by this writer: I admit to not knowing the first thing about this book before I requested it from Netgalley. But I was intrigued by the cover, with its blood-spattered pinup, and the idea of a murder mystery spanning over a century was right up my alley. And it all starts very strongly. The individual detectives are all quite distinctive from each other. And though I didn't particularly like two of the four (the 40s detective on the make and the futuristic amnesiac) I quite liked reading the other two's stories. The repressed Victorian detective was a decent piece of period work, and the present day Muslim detective was by far my favorite character. He knew a lot of people. Simon was friendly and approachable – and he was very supportive of other artists and writers. I know he was a mentor figure for some up-and-coming artists. He was well-known for being very inventive with his writing.” Whiteman’s unpleasant journey from the claws of the Nazis to setting himself up as a detective on-the-make in blitzed London is also interesting to see, though he’s very easily the most dislikeable figure in the group. Hasan’s storyline exploring race tensions in contemporary London through the prism of a young woman struggling with reconciling her two cultural identities as a Londoner and a Muslim in a difficult field like detective work is fascinating.Si Spencer sadly passed away from heart failure in February 2021, just before his 60th birthday. At the time of his death, a close friend paid tribute and said: “He would’ve been 60 this August. He was one of the good ones. It was fun to be around him. He was a really intelligent, generous and compassionate man. It’s being filmed throughout the United Kingdom in several big cities including Hull, Leeds, Grimsby, Bradford and Rotherham. Basically the collection (8 series joined together in one edition) jumps frequently between four different detectives in London over four time periods. Edmond Hillinghead in the 1890s, Karl Whiteman in the 1940s, Shahara Hasan in 2014, and Maplewood in 2050. Each detective finds a dead body, a weird symbol, and frequent lines said to them, "You are loved." Four detectives, four different eras, one murder victim, same MO, same location - appearing to each detective. Who killed John Bull? To the negative, as I said, I just couldn’t quite tease out all the meaning in the various storylines. I know generally what happened and the storyline is reasonably satisfying but there are so many loose ends in my head that I think it would take a couple more readings to properly sort out. The text isn’t terribly dense it’s just that there are so many threads and there is little visual difference between some characters to properly tell them apart. Adding to that the rapid switches between timelines make it difficult to know not only who is acting but also when they are in time and where they are. It is certainly a bit of a puzzle.

Stephen Graham (best known for Snatch, Peaky Blinders and Netflix’s The Irishman) will be playing Elias Mannix described as the “central character to the story”.The use of "HH" is a marker throughout is confusing, though Sam's double helix theory is probably right. Until I read his review I literally had no idea what was going on.
