Despite the above, some professional plasterers will start applying their second coat after only an hour or so. Depending on the drying conditions and after years of experience they will know when it’s safe to do so. We suggest leaving it for 24 hours as you wont have the same levels of experience at this stage. Safety Gear: Safety should always be a priority. Wear protective gear, including safety glasses, a dust mask, gloves, and suitable clothing to shield yourself from splashes and dust. Once the battens have been removed and any other voids or imperfections are filled to be level with the rest of the wall, the wall should be left for another hour or so to start the drying out process. Plastic Sheeting or Drop Cloths: To protect the surrounding area from render splashes and spills, lay down plastic sheeting or drop cloths.

Mixing the Render Sand and cement render is produced by meticulously combining sand, cement, and water in specific ratios tailored to the wall type and intended usage. Precise measurement and thorough mixing are essential for consistency.Wet dash render is not the same as pebbledash. With pebbledash, the cement render is applied first and then small pebbles are thrown onto the wall. Whereas with wet dash render, the small pieces of gravel are mixed in with the sand and cement mix and it is all applied together. This gives a very different finish. With pebbledash, the final finish is the exposed stones themselves, but with wet dash render, the stones aren't visible. What this means is that the wet dash render can be painted and updated whenever you want (pebble dash can't be painted). In terms of what paint to use, don’t skimp on quality here, go for the best paint you can afford. It will not only go on easier it wil last much longer also. One of the very best to go for is Sandtex or Dulux Weathershield. Using a water hose or any other water source, spray the wall you intend to sand down until it is sufficiently wet. Start applying the second coat using your plasterers steel float. Mound the mix on to a hawk to make it easier to transport and apply. Apply even pressure firmly on the sander, but do not press too hard to avoid damaging the motor and scratching the wall.

The final stage in the rendering process is sponge the surface over. Many renderers will use an ordinary large car sponge which is very slightly damp, to give a final pass to the wall.Allow the render to dry and cure properly before applying any additional coats or paint to the silicone. For more detailed information on how to correctly mix mortar and render see our project on Mortar Mixes here.

For the second render mix this again will be a 5:2:1 mix but this time you’ll need to use more soft sand than sharp sand so the mix will be 3 soft sand, 2 sharp sand and cement. Silicone Render: This is basically a sand and cement or lime render with silicone added into the mix. Like the acrylic render it has increased water resistance and flexibility but unlike acrylic it stays breathable Once it is hard enough to push a rendering float onto the surface without render bulging out around the float, you can begin to float the surface up. If it is allowed to freeze it will expand and on thawing it will leave a void which will again fill with water when it rains. This will also freeze and so the process goes on. See our project on Freeze-Thaw action for more information. How to Render a Wall

is our most popular grain size and is the choice of most installers. This is because it’s easy to install, it goes far in terms of coverage so it’s very cost-effective, and because it’s more textured due to its slightly larger grain size, it also hides imperfections in the basecoat. Homeowners like this grain size because it doesn’t have a painted finish but it’s not overly textured – you can only really see it when you look closely! 2mm Render Grain Size Corner Tools: Corner tools, such as corner trowels or corner floats, are essential for finishing the corners of walls neatly and precisely. Sand the surface –once the filler is dry, use fine-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface and remove any rough edges. Clean the Surface Before painting, thoroughly clean the render surface, removing dirt, dust, or debris. Allow it to dry completely.Poor Adhesion Improper surface preparation or mixing can lead to inadequate adhesion, resulting in peeling or flaking. Durability. Sand and cement render provides a robust, long-lasting exterior finish capable of withstanding harsh weather conditions. Wet dash render has historically been a very popular rendering solution in the northern parts of England as well as Scotland (where it is known as harling). This is because wet dash render is the ideal solution to protect your home from the harshest of weather conditions, especially in locations where your home is really exposed. The uneven surface of wet dash render creates a larger surface area, and what this means is that water is better able to evaporate from its surface, making it less likely that it will seep into your home. If you want your render to be hard-wearing Coverage: Approximately 3 meters square per litre depending on porosity and how rough the substrate.
